Christmas and VERB

This time of year is always crazy and VERB is no different! So I wanted to give you the inside scope on what all is happening with VERB through the holidays. So here it goes:

December 7th: Small groups 7pm (Band Practice at 6pm)
December 11th: Kids play 6pm no VERB service. The reason were not having a service is we have several students in the play along with several of my leadership teams kids (including mine) in the play. So we didn't want to battle with the show or miss it. Plus, we want to be supportive of future students of VERB. So, on this night we will have band pratice at 4pm and then open our doors for games and snacks at the bar at 5:30 and then close it all down at 5:55 to go over the the sanctuary. After the show we will open the VERB Lounge back up.

December 14th: Small groups 7pm (Band Pratice at 6pm)

December 18th: VERB Christmas Party (Band pratice at 4pm)
The party will consist of food (that we are hoping you can help bring...you know, some of the best Christmas food ever!!), Ugly Christmas Sweater contest, and Christmas games. Doors open at 5:30.

This is also an excellent opportunity for Students to bring non-persihable food items to help feed local Hungry children through Harmon's, Woodbridge and Hilltop Elementary Schools. (Check out the list of potential food items at the end of this blog)

December 21st: Small groups 7pm (Band pratice at 6pm)

December 25th: NO VERB: MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

December 28th: NO VERB (Church closed)

January 1st: NO VERB

January 8th: VERB Moves to SUNDAY AM's!! (9am serivce in Grand Hall 1) Today will be the big switch from Sunday night to Sunday morning. We will no longer be offering anything on Sunday nights. Our full services will be from 9:00am to 10:15am with the VERB Lounge open for games and snacks till 11am.

New Series "Welcome to the Movies"

We all love movies. I find it rare to find someone who does not like movies. Now the reasons on why someone likes them vary; but I love movies because I love stories and it's easy to get caught up in a story. It's easy to recognize different elements in a story, and it's easy to get involved in a story.

God is writing a bigger story then we or hollywood could imgiane and He is inviting us to be apart that story. Over the next couple of weeks were going to discuss God's invite into that story, the reasons that stop us from accepting His invite and to close out the series is the how to accept His invite into our bigger story.

Hopefully will see you over the next couple of weeks.

Facebook without ceasing

Have you ever read this passage before: "Never stop praying." 1 Thessalonians 5:17 and thought "There is no way that can happen". I know I have before and felt as if it was an impossible task.

The other day I noticed that I kept looking at my phone and refreshing my facebook page and realized with office computer, home computer, phone, Ipod that I am always connected to facebook. Always connected to my 500 something friends (I know I should downsize). Probably the longest I go without checking facebook is while I am sleeping (I know, another thing I should downsize).

But it got me thinking about this 1 Thessalonians 5:17 and our students at VERB. We have taught on this passage before and taught that prayer is not about always having to be in a quiet place, you don't have to be kneeling down, you don't have to close your eyes. Prayer could happen anywhere (just like facebook can happen anywhere). Yes, there are times....many times; daily even, that we should slow down, be quiet, kneel, close our eyes.

I don't know if Paul, the writer of 1 Thessalonians is implying that never stop praying means to always be in your prayer closet or always on your knee with your eyes closed. I believe that he was telling us to have more of the facebook style of prayer; that you are always connected to God, your never too far from Him in your thoughts or words. You are always hitting the refresh button making sure you and God are up to date on everything.

Never Stop Praying becomes attainable when we are checking into God as you would be checking up on a friend.

Paul is not trying to make our life harder, but easier. If you go a couple of hours or a couple of days not connecting on facebook and you log in and want to read all that you missed it will take some time (or if you’re like me, you give up). But if your always connected like I know most of us are it only takes a few minutes. The same is true with Paul's thinking, if you never stop praying it’s easier to stay up to date and connected to Him. And not feel like you have to play catch up and often feel like you want to give up.

So today, every time you check facebook first say a little something to God and check in with Him and see how your life might change throughout the day.

5th Quarter

Were hosting an event on Oct 14 called 5th Quarter, basically a blow out party. It's intention is to get students to come out after the football games on Friday night and hang out at VERB. It will start at 9pm and go until midnight. Were going to have Chick-fil-a, a band, a massive bonfire and games. Cost is $15 for the night. Tickets are on sell now for the event.

Here's the catch if you buy you tickets by Oct 12 you will be registered for a $50 gift card to iTunes. So if you wanted to you could buy your ticket and all of your friends tickets for them (then collect the money from them later) and you be registered to win the card for all those tickets. Our hope is to have a ton of students come out and get as many tickets sold early as possible.

Get in before it's too late....

Changes to the OCT. calendar

This month we have had to make some changes to the calendar for the month of Oct. The changes are:
- Oct. 21 Friday night Frenzy
- Oct. 28 David Crowder Band Concert

Both of these events have been canceled for this month. FNF is canceled because of the 5th Quarter were doing on Oct. 14 at 9pm and we don't want to over load the calendar every week. More info about the 5th Quarter to come out later today.

David Crowder Band Concert is canceled because the event sold out several weeks ago and the only tickets for sell are like $176 as of yesterday.

If you have any questions about these events please email me at jason.harris@heritagec.net

Small groups...DONT MISS IT.

We started small groups last week and if you missed out no worries; there's still time! Heck, we never stop accepting students into small groups! Last week we allowed small group leaders and students to get to know one another and catch up on summer events and how school was going so far.

After this week there will be a change in how were doing things. Last Wednesday and this Wednesday all small group leaders will be there at 6 to meet all students and parents. Whether it's this week or a month from now if your wanting your child to join small group you as the parent will need to meet the small group leader and fill out a little paperwork. It's important to us that parents and leaders know each other and have good communication. So the only thing that will change is the fact that the leader may not get there until 6:15, 6:30, so you may miss them. Take advantage of this perfect time to meet them!

Another feature were adding to small groups this year is an email that will be sent to you from the small group leader about the weeks topic. Here's this week's email:

Dear parents,

This week we started a four-week series called "God's Big Story." This series will provide teenagers with a big-picture view of God's story, with the goal of giving students a healthy understanding of what the Bible is about and how it applies to their lives.

In this first week, we looked at Genesis 1-2 and examined the picture of how God created the world. The world is broken, but God didn't create it that way. He created a world that was truly "good." It's important for our teenagers-and for adults-to remember how God meant things to be. We live in a world filled with pain and difficulties, but God designed a world that was good.

Each week in our series, we're giving students two key words to help them remember the big idea. This week our key words were CREATION and GOOD. Simply put, God created the world, and it was good.

Here are some questions you might use this week to engage your teenager in some conversation about this week's lesson:

•What main idea stuck with you from your small group meeting this week, and why?
•What is one way that you see God reflected in your own life?
•If all of humanity is created in God's image, how might this affect or shape the way you treat other people?

Thanks for your trust as you allow your child to be a part of our ministry!

If you are not signed up yet with your child's small group leader and you would like to. Email me at Jason.harris@heritagecc.net and I will make sure that you are.

Parent + VERB = Great Partners

We think at VERB that if VERB and the parents are on the same page and working together it will make for a better outcome with the student. So one of the ways that VERB is trying to partner with the parent is by providing you with some follow up material for during the week.

Every week at VERB we cover a topic; most of the time we spend a few weeks on a certain theme (this week we start a 2 week series on Friends). So what were going to do is provide you with the main points, the verses (once our podcasts get fixed you will be able to listen to it) and a few questions for you. This way you can have some follow up discussion later on in the week with your student.

This discussion can be done during a meal or a car ride or you can have several through out the week. Our hope is that you would use this resource to help stir some Biblical dialogue and communication between you and your student and help VERB keep the message in their life a little bit longer.

This content will be loaded on the VERB website every Sunday night or first thing Monday morning. You can find this resource on the VERB website here: Sermon Discussions

Hopefully this will be a helpful partnership and it will continue to grow more and more. Let me know if there's anything I can do for you and your family.

P.S. - The Parent BBQ coming up on September 30th at 6pm. It's FREE! We DO need you to R.S.V.P. by Wednesday night. Please make time in your schedule to make it out to this dinner.

Thursday, September 15, 2011

We all know that this day in age with Facebook, having real friends and keeping real friends is a bit of a challenge. It's almost like friends are changed as often as students brush their teeth or middle school boys take showers which is about once or twice a week.

This Sunday night at VERB were going to be looking at the good and bad of friendships and even though the Bible is not 100% clear on how to get friends or how to keep friends. It is pretty clear on a few things we should look for in friendships and things we should aspire to as a friend. Hope to see you Sunday night.

Hurt...um Yea!

I'm sure we all have been emotional, physically, intellectually, romantically hurt before in one or all of these areas.

I remember as a 3rd baseman in middle school my coach trying to teach me a lesson about moving away from the bag when the ball was hit and he was wanting me to lean into the bag. So he was standing about 10 feet in front me hit balls with a bat as hard as possible at me and I was having to catch the ball and I was doing good until one of balls the coach hit at me, hit me! The ball hit me square in the forehead and left the imprints of the stitching of the ball in my head for a couple of days. Talk about physical pain.

I remember as a high school student being in a relationship with this girl (a relationship that If I am honest I should admit that I should have never been in) but had spent a lot of time with girl only to find out that almost the whole time we were together she was also seeing someone else. I guess that's why you should never date someone from another school...it's hard to keep tabs on that. It was a bad romantic hurt.

I'm sure I can keep going with stories... I love telling them. Most of us can agree that hurt and pain is everywhere in our past and the Bible tells us that if we're not careful with what we do with this hurt, it can cause us problems in the future. The Bible gives us instruction on how to handle this and this Sunday morning were going to address hurt and unforgivess. If you can, read Matthew 18: 21-35. Hope to see you at HCC.

VERB's Newsletter

This week at VERB:

Last night we talked through part 2 of "The Exodus Project" and we took a small look at the plagues that God laid out on Egypt in the attempt for Pharaoh to let God's people the Israelites go. As we study Pharaoh and his reaction to each one of the plagues we discover that a lot of us act like Pharaoh. When God comes along and ask us to let go of ourselves so that we can truly worship Him we act stubborn and we act like were bigger then God and we can one up Him. When God ask us to give up certain things in our life to worship Him we don't, we hold on to them ever so tightly. Then finally when we do give over things to God we do it just to feel relief just like Pharaoh did each time to feel relief from the plagues only to change his mind. Much like us when we leave church or close our Bible or walk away from our prayer time we change our mind and pick up the right where we left off.

Hopefully as we discovered last night how easy it is for us to be like Pharaoh that we pick up the fact that God is right in front of us asking us everyday to let go of ourselves a little more so that we truly can worship Him freely.

VERB is taking the summer to read through the book of Exodus if you don't have a copy you can get yours here:http://verb.heritage-cc.org/

Hope to see you next Sunday night at 5:30 as we talk about part 3 of "The Exodus Project"

VERB Newsletter

This week at VERB:

Wednesday night:
This week we close out our study on Joseph. The study of Joseph has been a really good one and it didn't matter if students knew everything about the story or nothing at all. There was good conversation on both sides of it.

Sunday Morning:
I don't know if we have ever talked about the 2 things we offer on Sunday morning on the blog. But every Sunday we have 2 classes that happen. The 1st class is for 5th and 6th graders we call 56 club that happens at 9am and then we have a Middle School Bible study that happens at 11am for all middle school students. Both classes are really good at engaging students in the word and allowing them to have the opportunity to be apart of something on Sunday morning instead of attending the adult service.

Sunday Night:
We have a few things going on Sunday night:

The 1st one is at 5:30 it's for parents primarily of 5th graders but it is open to all parents that want to come and check things out. This Sunday were inviting all 5th grade students up to VERB so that them and their parents will get to see what happens on a regular basis at VERB before summer hits. At 5:30 were hosting a meeting where we will be sharing everything VERB and answering any questions. Then parents and 5th graders are welcome to stay for service and then enjoy a pizza party afterwards where those students and parents will get to meet other leaders and get any other questions answered. If you have any questions about this please email me.

The 2nd thing is the start of our last series we do before summer. Were calling it "That will leave a mark" and were going to be talking about how your actions can leave positive and negative marks and how that affects you life.

Trusting even with Facebook

I was talking with a Youth Pastor friend the other day about Pastoring students in this post Facebook era. He was concerned about a student of his who was putting stuff on their facebook and was worrying about them. I started to think and wonder about how truly things aren’t much different when me and this YP were in youth group together. Meaning we would have great services and really feel connected to God in the service and want to change our lives but then the next day or a couple of days later we would be in some form of trouble. But then the next time we would be in church and we would pursue God like it never happened. I realize that some of that for me at least was fake and putting on a show but not all of it was. There where some genuine times while I was in high school that I was pursuing God but I also had a lot of faults. My YP never new about them unless I told him or my parents told him.

The difference between then and now is FB and students put everything from how they feel to what words they used to cuss out the science teacher to what their mom was doing that morning that made them so mad.

As a YP it’s hard to have a deep conversation with a student about their relationship with God and then only to see the next day they got suspended from school for getting in a fight over a girl. It’s hard to balance when and what to engage each student with. I was called a FB creeper the other day because I engaged a student who in small group was expressing his struggle with sin and so I’m challenged him on some of the things that he was doing and putting on FB.

I don’t mind being called a FB creeper by this kid in my small group but I don’t want to be know as the pastor who knows all the dirt and creeps on pages. You would think students would be ok with this since they put it on FB but they aren’t.

So it’s a thin line that my team and I have to balance to be engaged with students and trusting God from week to week with these students. Using the info we get for prayer and when the Holy Spirit opens the door for us to engage we do so. I know the stuff me and my youth group friends got into and so I know my YP was worried and probably prayed often for us even though he didn’t have all the facts.

Please pray for...

Clint Dobson and family. I met Clint and his wife Laura of 2 yrs this past fall while I went to El Salvador on a scouting mission trip to build a clean water well. He’s 28 yrs old and has been the Pastor of North Point Baptist Church which is a campus church of First Baptist of Arlington Texas for 2 yrs.
On Thursday a man somehow got into the church offices and murdered Clint and put his admin Judy in the hospital fighting for her life. Please pray for Laura and their family and the recovery of Judy and for Clint’s church during this time.

Thank you

Ownership

When I was 16, I was given my first car. It was a 1980 Ford F150. (It happened to have been my now wife Brittany’s father’s truck that he cherished and took very good care of for years.) My parents bought this truck and gave it to me as a gift. It was some gift.
I “sort of” took care of it for a while, but after a few short weeks, the newness wore off and it just became “a truck.” Don’t get me wrong, I loved it. I loved that my parents gave me this truck...I loved being able to take my friends around in it...and I loved taking girls on dates in my very own truck. However, it was often months before I cleaned it or washed it...and forget about oil changes, they were always long overdue! I was in a few fender benders here and there and never took the time to get them fixed. The bottom line is that I just didn’t take good care of my truck.
Needless to say by the time I sold the truck 2 years later, it was not the same truck it once was. Long gone were the days when it had been cherished and “well-nurtured.” Brittany (my wife) told me after we were married that every time her dad saw the truck he shook his head and openly said that he regretted selling it to us. (I hope he didn’t feel the same way about me marrying his daughter! I think I have taken much better care of her than I did of that truck!)
Right after I graduated, I saved a little money and bought a 99 Mitsubishi Mirage. At the time of purchase, it only had 7,000 miles – so it was almost brand new. Then I was the one making payments – I had real “ownership” of this car. I had a full-time job and my parents regularly reminded me that this car was my full responsibility. But somehow this car was different – I washed and waxed it weekly. I cleaned it every other day...I changed the oil ahead of schedule. I even started investing money into and making it an even better car. I really loved it. I took pride in it – I had ownership in my car.
This past summer, my wife and I bought our first house. Leading up to this purchase throughout our 6 years of marriage, we lived in 5 different apartments that we rented and never really took “extra” care of because we knew if something happened – someone else would have to come and take care of it. Plus with our track record, we knew we would likely move in a year again anyway. I found myself treating my apartment just a little better then I did my first truck. There was no pride – there was no ownership of the place we lived in.
Well last summer that changed...and just like my car, our home has been cared for with pride and ownership. Cleaning, mowing, and organizing is now a welcomed part of home ownership for us. I am so proud of our house and look forward to taking care of it (I may re-think it when loads of things need repairing!) But I am enjoying it very much and want to show off our new home.
When I think about ownership and ministry I think back to the disciples. It was easy for them for those 3 years following after Jesus just to fall in line with what Jesus was doing or what He was saying – to go along for the ride! It was easy to take orders…I would imagine they didn’t own their ministry in the same way Jesus did – you can pick up on that with some of things Jesus says to them (Mark 9:19, Luke 22:46).
You can also see their commitment to the ministry after Jesus died. They all went back to what they were doing (John 21 1 – 3). They just didn’t pick up the ball and roll with it. But, thank God there came a time when these disciples rose up and took ownership over what they had learned the past 3 years with Jesus. That time came after Jesus rose and then ascended into the heavens (Acts 1:6 - 10).
These disciples were not the same ones that fled when Jesus was captured – these disciples had taken ownership over their calling – they took ownership over what Jesus had been telling them for the past 3 years. Further, they took what Jesus started and continued the movement and started churches. Thousands of people started moving into a relationship with God because of what these disciples were doing. I mean they took ownership to a new level with the giving of their lives – their daily lives and their death to this ministry – this calling that Jesus started.
Ownership by Webster’s standards basically means to “have or hold as property to have power or mastery over.” When I think about ministry and specifically our ministry at VERB, I want us to have OWNERSHIP over whatever we are doing for VERB…to have power to hold as property. To take pride in what we do at VERB…whatever role we may have to play in it. As Pastor Steve would say “The stakes are never higher then what you do for the church (because what you do for the church – you do for God).” Whatever we do at VERB has eternal effects! Students may come into a relationship with God and change the course of their future by your very involvement at VERB. What an awesome thought.
We should take pride in everything that we do at VERB because of those stakes. You are involved in VERB for a certain reason – why is that? When you think about what you do when you are serving – do you take pride? Do you think you take ownership over your responsibility? Or are you lacking? Ownership I think is vital – because I think as part of this team you have a stake at what happens at VERB and you are a very important member of this team. With ownership comes risk – just ask Jesus or the disciples. There has to be risk when you take a chance on having ownership over something – especially a ministry where people are involved because people have sin and when there is sin someone is always going to get hurt or left disappointed. If we never want to get hurt then we should never take risks because with every risk we take there is always the chance that we will get hurt. Even as simple as becoming a part of Student Leadership – it’s a risk and there is a high chance that you could get hurt.
But the good news is that the benefits far outweigh any risks. You could be a part of something that can and will change your life and the lives of your friends and family forever. I hope that you will take this journey with me as we embark on making VERB a ministry where students can come and find a real relationship with Jesus Christ and develop friendships and relationships with people like you.

Last Night of R.U.N.

At VERB (our Student Ministries at HCC) we have been in a series over the past 3 weeks where we are looking at R.U.N. R - Reveal Yourself, U - Utilize your toolsaround you, N - Never give up or in. What we were doing in this series was looking at the life of David and pinpointing some key element's of his story that would help us have a fighting chance against temptation! Because we all know that it doesn't matter who we are or how old we are until the day we die we will have to fight temptation. I believe David gave some great insight into those very things that we would need to fight against those temptations! I think it was a great topic and hopefully it was helpfully to a lot of students!

Starting next week

I'm going to start next week with a VERB newsletter that will cover what we will be talking about on Sunday nights and wed nights and cover upcoming events! I hope it will help keep you informed! It will appear on this blog and each time I post something I will send to either your email or FB!

Superbowl

I love having our students services on Sunday nights for the most part! Except this Sunday! This Sunday is Superbowl Sunday and I love Football and my leaders love football and we have a ton of students who love football!

So this Superbowl instead of cringing at the fact that we were going to miss alot of the game and miss alot of students who are going to miss church for the Superbowl! Some leaders got together and said not this year (at least we hope)!

One of my leaders hooked us up with the equipment for us to watch the game in our lounge and since we were not going to cancel the service another leader is bringing a DVR so that we can record the game and not miss any of it! Then alot of other leaders are bringing food for themselves and all the students! I love it when leaders step up and come up with and plan and meet a need! It's going to be a great night!

Hope you plan on coming to the service and staying late for the game! So that means getting your homework done early!
